چکیده

Urban environments with a high degree of industrialization are infested hazardous chemicals and airborne pollutants. These pollutants can have devastating effects on human health, causing both acute chronic diseases such as respiratory infections, lung cancer, heart disease. Air pollution monitoring is vital not only to citizens, warning them the health risks air pollutants, but also policy-makers, assisting drafting regulations laws that aim at minimizing those risks. Currently, predominantly relies expensive high-end static sensor stations. stations produce aggregated information about unable capture variations in individual's exposure. As an alternative, this article develops citizen-based system captures individual exposure levels during daily indoor outdoor activities. We present low-cost portable carry out measurement campaign using sensors demonstrate validity benefits measurements. Specifically, we (i) successfully classify data into outdoor, (ii) validate consistency accuracy our outdoor-classified measurements reference station. Our experimental results further prove effectiveness by providing fine-grained insights over wide geographical area, identifying probable causes dependent (iii) citizens personalized their commute.

The next generation of low-cost personal air quality sensors for quantitative exposure monitoring

Advances in embedded systems and low-cost gas sensors are enabling a new wave of low-cost air quality monitoring tools. Our team has been engaged in the development of low-cost, wearable, air quality monitors (M-Pods) using the Arduino platform. These M-Pods house two types of sensors – commercially available metal oxide semiconductor (MOx) sensors used to measure CO, O3, NO2, and total VOCs, a...

Gas Sensors for Monitoring Air Pollution

The air pollution caused by exhaust gases from automobiles has become a critical issue. In some regions, fossil fuel combustion is a problem as well. The principal gases that cause air pollution from automobiles are nitrogen oxides, NOx (NO and NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO). Because NOx gases with sulfur oxides (SOx) emitted from coal fired plants cause acid rain and global warming and produce...

Air pollution exposure monitoring and estimating

This paper presents an integrated exposure monitoring system, based on an expansion of existing air quality monitoring systems using dispersion modelling. The system allows: (1) identifying geographical areas whose inhabitants are most exposed to ambient pollution; (2) identifying how many people in an area are exposed to concentrations of pollution exceeding air quality guidelines; (3) describ...

Mitigating Slow Dynamics of Low-Cost Chemical Sensors for Mobile Air Quality Monitoring Sensor Networks

The last decade has seen a growing interest in air quality monitoring using networks of wireless low-cost sensor platforms. One of the unifying characteristics of chemical sensors typically used in real-world deployments is their slow response time. While the impact of sensor dynamics can largely be neglected when considering static scenarios, in mobile applications chemical sensor measurements...
